Internships are available to college students, grad students, and recent graduates at the
Native American Women’s Health Education Resource Center (NAWHERC). Issues
address Indigenous rights and health issues. Candidate works to actively promote civil
rights and women’s rights. Intern projects may include work on issues of Reproductive
Justice; Prevention of violence against women; MMIW; Conflict Resolution; and Goal
Setting.

Internship Details

Internships range from three months to one year, with three months being the absolute
minimum stay. A résumé with references is required, and we will need to know the time
frame you expect to be here. We will let you know promptly whether or not you have
been selected for an interview for an internship. We are able to put résumés on hold
until a later date if your plans change in the meantime, but no positions can be held.
Priority will be given to those wishing to stay six months or longer.
Intern positions are available all year round. 

Each intern will be assigned to the
Resource Center and to the Domestic Violence Shelter, which is located four blocks
away. After arrival and an orientation period, assignments will be given out based on the
individual’s experience, strengths, interests, and, if necessary, academic requirements.
Each intern receives $250.00 per month along with free room at the shelter and partial
board from the Resource Center’s food pantry.

Location

The NAWHERC is located in Lake Andes, South Dakota, a rural community with a
population of approximately 1,029, based on the Yankton Sioux Reservation, which is
64 square miles and consists of several small reservation community.
